WWJD?
What Would Jesus Do? These accessories were really trendy with the Christian crowd when I was in high school. I wasn’t part of that crowd but even now I often think about its message.
The problem with the Jesus that is fed to us is that he is so completely not human. Some will argue that Jesus was human, it’s just that he never sinned, that he was pure. I think that sin (inasmuch as I believe in the concept of sin) is a part of humanity. How could Jesus have been human if he was always a good and nice person? It’s fine and dandy to do your best to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, the world can only profit from a few more people being guided by love and kindness, but after you’ve wronged someone, whether intentionally or not, as you inevitably will, what then? If Jesus never did harm or wrong anyone in any way, how can he guide us in these moments where we feel the most lost, the most fragile, the most human?
I reject this perfect, infallible concept of Jesus but I am still without guidance in my less-than-perfect moments.

That’s why one of the most beautiful lines in the Bible to me is Eli Eli Lama Sabachtani (sp?) My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me! If Jesus was human only once, that was it.
